World of Advertisements

Factors that need to be considered before making an advertisement

UNIQUENESS

Every advertisement has to bee unique, this means that each one has its differences. If every commercial was the same it would be boring. After all. they all have the same goal, to sell you their products. Some companies are trying different ways to sell their products. Some may show their product and then what other people think of it. Some may show how helpful it can be. Some may just have a commercial that grabs your attention in a short time. Some commercials may be based all around the product. Some may show something else and then in the last 10 seconds mention their products

PSYCHOLOGY

Commercials are all about making you buy their product, they might decide to show fake facts or overrate their product. There are several ways of having people buy their products. Some may say like" no1 in Italy" or " no1 in France" You probably noticed this in commercials like Rio Mare or Pasta. Some commercials try to trick your mind, these are usually for drugs. They describe their product and then in about 3 seconds say the side effects. They think that if they say it quickly, people wont bother and any ways buy their product. People wont record the commercial and play it in slow motion. If they said it normally people would hear the side effects and wont risk to try. Other commercials show how their product as refreshing in case of PEPSI. Pepsi or Coca Cola would usually show a commercial which shows how someone is in a desert who is dying of thirst finds a coke, drinks it and feels so refreshed like he is in the alps. Companies are also trying to make their add shorter and more affective.

PRESENTATION & SELECTION OF SUITABLE MEDIA

When making advertisements companies have to use certain designs and font size depending on what they are making. If the company is selling baby products, they would use baby friendly font, which looks childish and just better. A study shows that most of the times if you choose between two same things, but in different packages, you would pick the better looking one. Example, If you had two same vines, and one had a wrap that said" made in 2008" and another one saying" made in 1898" you would pick the older one, just because of the look of the wrap. Sometimes your eyes choose for you.  Advertisements are all about making you buy products. Companies are trying to make their product look very nice and all, but when you unwrap it, it looks totally different from the picture.

CONTENT

This is what everything adds up to. An advert is all about what its content. In order to make a great advertisement companies have to consider the 4 types of contents in order to make a successful advertisement. These are the four:
- The way the product works
- Regular people like the viewers showing why they prefer this product
-  A celebrity showing his linkage for the product
-  Significant parallel, where something parallel is shown as a metaphor to drive the point home

If these rules are followed, the company will be successful sale and promotion.

REGIONAL CULTURE

This is very important because different countries and the people in them have different viewpoints. If an international company like Mountain Dew is promoting their product in America, they would say something like " now with even more flavors." They say something like this because the country they are trying to sell the product in already knows about the product. This is why they say something new to add to the already made sales. If the same company is trying to sell the product in Spain, they would say something like " Try our newest product Mountain Dew, a refreshing carbonated drink." They would say this because the country doesn't know the product, so they are introducing it. Once the viewers start buying the product, they would say something like" Now available in 4 more flavors."

AN ELEMENT OF SURPRIZE

Advertising is not only about regional and cultural sensitivities. It is also about the element of surprise, this means that the advertisement has something that will surprise you. Lets say that the advertisement is about washing machines, but all you see are kids playing football. Suddenly a kid falls on the ground and the mom has to wash his shirt, this is when they show the washing machines and the good way they wash, and look at you thinking the advert has something to do with football. The advertisement focuses your mind on thinking about something else apart from the main subject, then they surprise you with the change of the plot.

These are all the things that need to be considered when making a successful advertisement. Companies are always on the move thinking of new ways to make you buy their products. If you want to make your own advertisement, focus on these things. I hope you found this guide useful.

Reflection on task

This was my first project on world of advertisement. I had to write the factors that need to be considered when making advertisements. It should contain about 750 words, I decided to write about 800. I went on the internet and researched about the types of factors. I was also given a website to visit which was the one I put in references. It was another blog about the same topic. If you want a more descriptive description please visit the blog. I found this task a bit difficult, but still didn't have a big problem. This is the part which was the most interesting to me. In order to make an ad successful, you have to research about the mentality of the viewers. I went and researched about the way people think when they see ads, what would they think and how would they act about it. I also had to research on the different regional culture, because the ad cant affect the people in a different culture. For example if a meat company promoted their products, lets say that they would promote their beef section in the US. It wouldn't be as good to promote their beef products in India because the cow is a holy animal. So it affect their culture and belief. This is what companies have to be careful about. Also every ad has to be unique in its own way imagine if all ads were the same. The ads that have the most impact are the ones that are different from others. People might say" wow I never saw this before, maybe I should go check it out." This also links with psychology. Overall I found this task a bit difficult at the beginning, but later it became easy. I would be doing more about ads in the future. I hope this helped in whatever way you might need it.

Task: Associate an Advert to each of the following

Task: Associate an Advert to each of the following

Association: Using images in hope that you will transfer good feelings about the image of the product.

When I see this, I think of a child- friendy product. This advert is unique because the whole front side is covered with cartoon characters. Not many companies do this. I can relate this to a cereal advertisement. It is related to cereal, because if you look closely, you could see milk and cereal.

Must have: Suggesting that you must have the product, to be happy, popular, or satisfied.

When I see this, I think of make up. The unique thing about this ad is that it gives a number next to each product, showing it on the catalogue. I can relate this to a make up ad. This is related to make up, because I can see equipment for make up and beauty.

Hype: Using words like amazing and incredible make products seem really exciting.

When I see this, I think of chocolate. The unique thing about this add is that it really describes the product. I can relate this to a chocolate ad. It is related to a chocolate ad, because you can clearly see chocolate and its flavors.

Fear: Using products to solve something you worry about.

When I see this, I t think of what I eat. It is unique, because it shows fear in a unique way. I can relate this to a gum advert. I think this because I think they want to show how gum can destroy bad breath from food.

Humor: Using adds that make you laugh.

When I see this, I think of cinemas. The unique thing is that it makes you laugh, and with that grabs your attention. I can relate this to a cinema ad. It is related to cinemas because you can read what it says on the ad.

Games and activities: putting the commercial into a form of a game.

I think of a paintball ad when I see this. It is unique because it shows the ad through a game of paintball. It is a paintball ad because you can see the gear they wear and the guns.

Call to action: telling you what to do

I think of a presidential poster. The unique thing about it is that the drawing is made in an interesting way, and is really persuasive. It is a presidential "vote now" poster. This is because you can clearly see the word "vote"

Claim: informing you about the product

When I see this, I think of some massager for fat. It is unique because it shows scientific discovery. I think it is an ad related to some equipment foe weight loss. It is related to that becaue you can clearly see it on the ad.

Repetition: repeating a message or idea.

I think of a sale. The unique feature is the amount of repetition used. I can relate this to a sale ad. It is a sale ad because it shows that.

Sense appeal: using sounds and sights to impact your senses.

When I see this, I think of a burger ad. The unique thing is that it shows the burger up close, and they made it look more appealing. I can relate this to a burger add because you can see a burger in the ad.

Special ingredients: promoting special ingredients .

When I see this, I think of a toothpaste ad. The unique thing is that it has a special ingredient in a product you wont expect to contain special ingredients. I can relate this to a toothpaste ad because it shows and is mainly focused on a toothpaste.

Testimonials and endorsements: featuring celebrities.

When I see this, I think of a perfume ad. The unique thing is that it features a celebrity. I can relate this to a perfume ad, because of the clear picture of the product.

Reflection on Task

I got a task to associate an ad to the each of the following features of ads. I went on the internet and found some ads that relate to the features. It was a bit difficult to find an ad that relates to the exact feature you need. I managed to find some ads that show some of the features. I also had to answer these questions:
-What comes to your mind when you see this ad?
-What is unique about this ad?
-To what type of ad can you relate this to?
-Why is it related to that?
I learnt a lot about the different types of ads. This really tested my research skills. What I did good is find the images that relate to the features of ads. What I could have done better is answer the questions in a better way with more description. Everything can be better if you want it to. What I liked about the task is that we had to really try our best to do it, also I liked when we had a challenge to find the picture that shows the features you are talking about. I had 30 min to complete this task, but because it was challenging, I took more time at home. over all, I think it was a great task because it doesn't just give you a task, it makes you learn throughout the process of your research and work. I hope we do more tasks like this because I really liked it and learnt something. I hope we do something like this again, because it was very educational. Throughout my research I came across an ad which really made me laugh, although I couldn't include it in my features, I still had to put it bellow, because it is worth seeing. It rally shows off the impact ads have on our world. Ads are usually not as important and sometimes useless, but sometimes you can actually come across ads with great meanings and stories behind them. I hope you learnt some new things from me, and I hope it helped you out.

This is an example of a funny, but still serious ad. It shows todays problems. It is aimed at the price of gas today. It is smart because the ad is aiming at the viewers with a humorous point

Methods of advertising

CONTENT

This is what everything adds up to. An advert is all about what its content. In order to make a great advertisement companies have to consider the 3 types of contents in order to make a successful advertisement. These are the three:

- The way the product works:

Here you will explain the way the product works and is used. This part is really the most important one because the customer needs to know what they buy and how it works. This part grabs the buyers attention.

- Regular people like the viewers showing why they prefer this product: This is also a very important part because here the viewers see that they are not tricked. If a product states “ Can fly” , then instead of just explaining, they use viewers to show that the customers are not being cheated. They would also give the viewer the oportunity to test the product.

-  A celebrity showing his/her linkage for the product: This can impact some people because if you are promoting a shampoo and you put a picture of Tom Cruise using it, people would be drawn to the product, because they think it’s good since a celebrity is using it

Here are a few examples of ads that show some of the points I just mentioned.

If these rules are followed, the company will be successful sale and promotion.

Reflection on "Methods of advertising"

I was given the task to create an a4 poster on methods of advertisement. I had to include the methods of advertisement. It was basically about the 3 contents that can be used to make a great ad. I included some things that could be put into an ad to make it more successful. I went and researched about ads, this is mostly about the mentality of people and how this impacts them. These 3 examples of contents in ads might impact people in different ways. For example if a company sells bikes, they might show some of their buyers explaining how good the product is. Then the viewers will think that they are not being tricked since people like them are having no problems with the product. This is the effect I was aiming for when I did this. Also a company might include a celebrity in the commercial because people might think that since a celebrity is using it, it is amazing. A company might also include a very descriptive description of their product. You could notice this in a mixer commercial or a massager commercial. You could come across these contents in commercials regularly. I also went on the internet and tried to find pictures that show off some of the contents in ads. For example a Dormeo pillow ad would be very descriptive, because it contains special foam, so the company would really describe its effects and the science behind it. Also I included a makeup ad featuring Rihanna, some viewers mike like the celebrity and for that reason buy the product. Overall, I think this was a successful poster. I really liked the task and hope that I will get more tasks like this one. There are more different contents in ads, but I included some more used ones. I hope this helped you.

Types of ads found in our everyday lives:

- Banner ads Target: computer users Advantatges: clear to see and cheap to make. Disadvantages: really annoying and causes users to exit the website.

- pop up ads Target: Computer users. Advantages: sometimes doesn't have an option to be closed. Disadvantages: Causes viewers to exit the page because the ad follows you wherever you scroll

- google search ads Target: Google users Advantages: clear and usually made by trusted brands. Disadvantages: It cant be closed

- Facebook ads Target: Facebook users. Advantages: usually related to video games.
Disadvantages: Immediately take you to the page and are usually clicked by accident.

- Email ads Target: e-mail users Advantages: a proper ad sent by email Disadvantages: Fill
up your mail and are basically a sort of virus.

- TV ads Target TV viewers Advantages: normal regular ads with a clear description, these are usually the best. Disadvantages: Usually long and are the reasons why people change channels.

- Newspaper ads: Target: newspaper readers. Advantages: small and usually useful things are promoted on them. Disadvantages: Had to read, usually

- In game ads Target: Gamers Advantages: usually promote other games and sometimes give you a reward if you watch it. Disadvantages: Short and not descriptive enough.

Design Situation
inquiry and analysis

Statement of inquiry: Advertisements as a form of communication have evolved through time and space to influence audience's perspective

Introduction:

I am a student of technology. As a part of the MYP design in tem 1, we are using DTP( desktop publisher), Desktop publishing enables us to create unique flyers, posters, newsletters, magazines, CD covers, brochures  both professionally and for school purposes. DTP is very useful for these reasons. IO can use it to design many things I need like what I just mentioned.
Goalkeeper football is a very special and unique part of football. It's very different from the other positions in football. This requires raining that needs effort put into it. In Dubai, there are not many schools for this specific position. In my life, I only had the experience to see on. se I don't want passionate kids to miss out on this. I am aiming to improve the skill of kids who like goalkeeping and are passionate about it.
As a part of my MYP project, I have decided to design a flyer about football for goalkeepers. I think flyers are one of the best options because they can be given out to people easily and do not cost much. The flyer has to be eye catching because it has to interest the person who gets it. You don't want him/her to put it in his pocket and just forget about it. The advantages for this type of ad is that it's small and has the most valuable information and usually doesn't have much text. It can also be printed in big quantities. The disadvantages are that it has to be very interesting or it doesn't grab attention. Also it has a limits space for description.

The best way for this to be affective is to give it out in public areas. Also, because I am looking at football, I could go to and make an event and then give out training flyers in big amounts and they spread the world quickly. You probably saw this type of ad before. I am targeting passionate kids who want to be great goalkeepers. I could go handing out flyers about the training. I feel confident that I will be able to come up with and effective design using DTP. I think I can make it look very appealing. I am good at coming up with eye catching designs. On my flyer I will put a big title which will make people get more interesting. I will also put a nice logo and pictures to come with it. I think I could do this in about 2 weeks since it requires detailed design and printing.

This is another task where I had to make a flyer for the national day celebrations.

My flyers:

Here I was given a task to plan out my flyer for my chosen academy. I chose the one I like the most which is goalkeeping. We had two sheets which we had to fill in. The first one was the drawing and the second one is the ideas for the drawing. I wrote down some great ideas for my flyer. For my drawing, I chose to make it very appealing with a small logo and not much text. I wrote down all the details regarding the time, place and what the children will accomplish. I followed my ideas from before. The challenging bit was fitting in the ext, so it doesn't take up much space on the page. i also had to make it really colourful. I really think that this method of planning is effective because you get to brainstorm your ideas. I am happy with the way it came out on the first draft. The coloring could be improved, but generally, it looks good to me. I don't think that I will have to change much on my final digital version. I hope we do drafts like this for every big project that we do.

Here I made my drawing into a digital form. I went on Microsoft Publisher and then I created my final flyer for my academy. I am really happy with the way it came out, and this is because I had a lot of planning put into it. I also didn't have to change much from my drawing, because there wasn't much to change. The only thing I added was the price, and this was really important, so I had to. I also had a small challenge with colors, because I had to make the colors match with the grass in the background. If you pay attention, you could see that I colored the  text box depending on the colors of the background. Overall, I am really hope with the final flyer and the way it looks. I hope that I succeeded in my task and that people will like the design. I hope we do more tasks like this because I found it really interesting making this. What I think will be a good idea is to maybe make a commercial. I think this would be really effective because it makes the place more popular because of the amount of people knowing about the academy.

Reflection on peer evaluation:

My peer had to evaluate my blog based on the criteria we were given. He also had to write whether I did it or not and he had to put a small comment. In my opinion, I don't think that the comment has to be really big because you are just answering a question. He gave me a descent evaluation of my blog, which I am happy with. He could have done a better job with more description, but I am happy with what I got. He also took it a step further and added images of ticks which I really liked. I think he did take some time to do this, since he also changed the color of the text. Overall, I thin he did a great job showing his evaluation skills. I need to thank him for the time he spent evaluating.

Blog reflection:

I think I did a good job with my whole blog, because IO completed everything I had to, I made sure my reflections were at least 200 words. I also have titles for each task, and my blog is also filled with pictures which gives a better presentation. I found it relatively easy to follow my Unit on advertisements. I uploaded pictures of work I did without digital form. I am happy with the final look of the whole blog, and the information I have on it. I really liked this topic, I thought it was really a great overall unit. I used DTP to create my goalkeeper academy flyer, and also the national day flyer.
I learnt a lot about advertisements throughout my research process, and I hope to continue working on this blog. Finally, I have used all the information and ideas I got, and I shared it with people on this blog.

Reflection:

I had to make a flyer for Dubai Cares. I had to explain something about them, what they do and why. I went to the website and got my information, then I read what it sais and I wrote a small summary. I found the task easy because it wasn't a big challenge. I hope we do this again, but a bit more harder.
